Compton : College Standards Raised

Compton Community College President Edison O. Jackson said this week that the school is one of the first to meet state-mandated tougher graduation standards and that enrollment increased this semester for the sixth straight time.
Speaking at the school’s media luncheon Tuesday, Jackson said a soon-to-be-released accreditation report will praise the school for its curriculum.
“Our (degree) requirements are some of the highest (for a community college) in California,” Jackson said. He said this is a change from when he arrived three years ago, when there were some teachers who did not “believe that minority students can achieve a high level of success.”
Jackson said that the college’s enrollment is 5,244, up from 3,300 in 1985.
