The $100,000-a-Plate Dinner for Reagans

Regarding the recent Times articles concerning the $100,000-a-plate dinner on behalf of Nancy and President Reagan: It’s my opinion that such a dinner, regardless of its purported purpose--to raise funds for a Presidential Library--is an obscene flaunting of wealth and an insult to both the office of the President and the American public.
Certainly, anyone with one iota of intelligence knows that the rich enjoy a life style far beyond the imagination of “we the people.”
However, in these stressful days of “squeeze and need”--when people are losing their homes because they can’t pay their utility bills, when people can’t afford to pay their rents because of frequent increases and higher taxes, when people existing on “poverty-level-wages” discover that their income taxes have doubled and when the Reagans are allowed a $6-million vacation budget at the taxpayers’ expense while many of those same taxpayers cannot afford even one vacation--such a “gala occasion” and “overt extravagance” involving our President and other prominent public figures is in extreme bad taste.
