Lawmakers heard testimony from disabled motorists and others on the problems caused when states do not recognize handicapped parking permits from other jurisdictions. “It is ludicrous for us to remove one barrier to the handicapped by offering handicapped parking spots, only to erect another by refusing out-of-state residents the right to park there,” Rep. Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn.) told the House Public Works and Transportation subcommittee on surface transportation. Gejdenson has drafted legislation to require states to use a national handicapped access symbol and have reciprocity with all states.
