Local News in Brief : Official Cleared of Charges

A former president of the Compton Community College board has been acquitted of bribery charges for allegedly accepting $500 from an accounting firm in 1985 in return for his vote on a $92,500 contract.
A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury found Carl E. Robinson Sr. innocent Monday after a six-day trial, during which jurors viewed a videotape of him receiving an envelope containing the cash in a restaurant parking lot. Robinson said throughout the case that the money from West Covina accountant Rolland Boceta was merely a lawful campaign contribution.
“I feel a whole ton has been lifted off my head,” Robinson said.
Robinson, a 53-year-old postal worker, subsequently lost a bid for reelection by three votes and blamed his arrest for the defeat.
