British financier Lord Spens was arrested in London and charged with four offenses stemming from the 1986 takeover of a whisky manufacturer by the giant Guinness brewing firm, police said. Spens, 45, was released on bail and ordered to appear before a London court this morning, a police spokesman said. The charges against the former merchant banker included conspiracy to create a false market in shares, falsifying accounting and unlawful share support, the spokesman said. Spens is the sixth British businessman arrested in connection with Guinness PLC’s $5-billion takeover of Distillers PLC.
