HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL FINALS : Division V Girls : La Jolla Country Day, Lutheran Meet Again

SAN DIEGO — Lutheran High School gets a final shot at La Jolla Country Day in today’s San Diego Section Division V girls’ basketball championship game.
Lutheran, which lost twice to La Jolla Country Day this season, can redeem itself at 4:30 p.m. at Serra High School.
La Jolla Country Day (19-4) is seeded first in the playoffs. Lutheran (19-6) is the No. 2 seed.
In La Jolla Country Day’s semifinal victory against Bishop’s, the Torres trailed early and led by just three at halftime. In the second half, they went to a half-court, man-to-man defense that held Bishop’s to just 11 points and led to a 48-29 victory. The Torres also defeated Imperial in the playoffs.
La Jolla Country Day is led by guard Robin Chatman and forward Karyn Schell.
In Lutheran’s semifinal victory against Calvin Christian, the Knights scored just 12 points in the first half but hung on to win, 41-39. Calvin Christian’s Deb Vanderbyl was fouled at the game-ending buzzer and awarded two free throws. She missed both, allowing Lutheran to advance to today’s championship game.
The Knights also beat Borrego Springs in the playoffs.
Among the leading scorers for Lutheran are Hanne Horby and Janelle Neal.
