Lutheran High School overcame a poor first half and survived two free-throw attempts after the buzzer to beat visiting Calvin Christian, 41-39, Thursday and advance to Saturday’s San Diego Section Division V girls’ basketball championship game.
Lutheran, held to just 12 points in the first half, rallied to lead, 41-39, but fouled Deb Vanderbyl at the buzzer. Vanderbyl, who had 17 rebounds, missed both free throws with time expired. It was the final game not only for Calvin Christian (17-6) but also for Coach Frank Zuidema, who is retiring.
Hanne Norby had 20 rebounds and 13 points, and teammate Janelle Neal scored 16 points for Lutheran (19-6). Betsy Wilgenburg scored 23 for Calvin Christian (17-6).
Second-seeded Lutheran (19-6) will play top-seeded La Jolla Country Day Saturday at Serra High, 4 p.m.
