Van Nuys Fencer to Compete in Trials

More than 250 fencers, including one Olympic hopeful from the Valley, will compete today through Sunday in a North American Circuit competition at Pierce College.
The competition is sponsored by the U. S. Fencing Assn. and is a qualifying trial for prospective Olympic team members. Chris O’Loughlin of Van Nuys, ranked 33rd nationally, will compete in the foil events.
Preliminary rounds in the epee events will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. The foil events begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with final rounds continuing Sunday. The men’s sabre preliminary, direct elimination and final rounds also will take place Sunday.
