“Deaf President Now” was the cry, made by voice or by fluttering fingers, as about 1,500 people rallied at Gallaudet University in Washington to urge selection of the first deaf president in the school’s 124-year history. Gallaudet, established by Congress in 1864, is the only liberal arts college for the deaf in the United States. A presidential search committee gave the board of trustees a list of three finalists to fill the post vacated by Jerry C. Lee, who resigned Jan. 1 to go into private industry. Two of the candidates are deaf and one can hear. The trustees were expected to name a new president Sunday.
