Narrowness of a Freeway

Hurray for those Orange County residents who have taken action to bring attention to the ribbon-like narrowness of the Costa Mesa Freeway.

As a transplanted Midwesterner, I knew the lanes were exceptionally narrow the first time I drove on them. While all California expressways frightened me, the Costa Mesa Freeway terrified me.

At first I thought it was my imagination. The lanes couldn’t be as slim as they appeared. However, some concerned residents have gone out to measure and proved that they are even more narrow than I thought.

Let’s have some support for these heroic people who have taken on the road authorities. The Costa Mesa Freeway’s no-shoulder, too-narrow lanes spell disaster for too many of us. Let’s widen the lanes and add shoulders to make driving a little less harrowing.
