Penny Parking Doesn’t Make Cents, Town Finds

GREENFIELD, Mass. — The meter has expired on some penny parking in this western Massachusetts town, where selectmen voted to eliminate 1-cent meters on two downtown streets to raise more money.
Selectmen voted Tuesday to boost the parking rates on Main and Federal streets, the two busiest streets in the downtown commercial district, to 5 cents for 15 minutes, 10 cents for 30 minutes and 20 cents for an hour. Motorists will still be able to park on side streets for a penny and a nickel.
The new meters, which officials said should be installed in about two months, are expected to generate an additional $36,000 in revenue annually. The town now gets about $70,000 from its parking meters.
