An off-duty Los Angeles County Fire Department captain who went to a recently inherited house in Bell Gardens to pick up tools was fatally wounded by a transient staying there, authorities said Wednesday.
Howard Ure, 43, a 20-year veteran assigned to Station 3 in East Los Angeles, died Tuesday night at County-USC Medical Center. Investigators arrested Juan Echeverria, 21, early Wednesday and booked him at the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station on suspicion of murder.
According to sheriff’s deputies, Ure had gone to a house in the 5500 block of Watcher Street, a rental property owned by his late father-in-law, and was shot by Echeverria during a discussion with the woman who rented the house. Her identity was not disclosed.
