Local News in Brief : Placentia : Council Rejects Jail Use as State Holding Facility

City officials have decided not to allow the state to use the Placentia jail as a holding facility for felony parole violators.
The City Council voted 5 to 0 this week to reject the Department of Corrections’ controversial proposal to house parole violators up to 24 hours in the city jail until they could be transported to the California Institute for Men in Chino.
The Corrections Department had sought a new site because of overcrowding at County Jail where such violators currently are held.
Under the pilot program, up to 16 prisoners could have been held in the four-cell jail, which had been little used for some time, according to City Administrator Robert D’Amato.
The state had proposed to pay the city $10,400 a month to lease the site, he said. It would have been the first program of its kind in the state.
“The council members felt they didn’t need this kind of income, and they didn’t want to house felons and use our jail in that fashion,” D’Amato said.
