Fire officials in Anaheim closed off several streets near a chemical company in the north section of the city after a cloud of sulfuric acid was released Thursday afternoon.
No injuries were reported from the incident, although fire officials said 15 people went to hospitals as a precaution and were later released. No one was evacuated from the scene, authorities said.
The white gaseous cloud was released from the Stepan Chemical Co. at 1208 N. Patt St. at about 3:45 p.m. The cloud moved in a westerly direction and dissipated quickly, authorities said.
The plant manager, Don Rehms, said the vapor was released when equipment used in a new sulfur-burning process failed. No one inside the plant was injured, he said.
The plant is located in a mixed residential and industrial neighborhood just south of the Riverside Freeway.
