Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor” finally opened in Tokyo on Saturday, complete with controversial newsreel scenes of Japanese atrocities in China in 1937. The film’s pre-opening was rocked by debate over deletion of that footage by its Japanese film distributor. The film will be shown at 70 theaters in major cities across Japan for two months before moving to 130 theaters in smaller cities and towns for the following 10 months. The movie is expected to attract as many as 2 million Japanese moviegoers.
