U.N. mediator Diego Cordovez met with Afghan Foreign Minister Abdul Wakil in Kabul in his effort to reach a peace settlement in Afghanistan. Cordovez met earlier with officials in neighboring Pakistan, which conducts indirect talks with Afghanistan through Cordovez. The Washington Post reported that Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq said in an interview that he will not sign a peace accord with the current Soviet-backed Afghan regime. Pakistan wants an interim coalition government in place before signing a four-point peace plan being negotiated in Geneva.
