Empire League : Werner’s Layup Gives Esperanza Win

Junior forward Matt Werner’s layup with one second left gave Esperanza High School a 58-56 Empire League boys’ basketball victory over Cypress Friday at Esperanza.
Cypress’ Greg Bedford had tied the score, 56-56, with a basket with 20 seconds left.
Werner and Mark Morris had 14 points each for Esperanza (8-8, 3-2). Bedford and Joe Pinkston scored 15 each for Cypress (2-3, 5-12).
El Dorado 62, Katella 61--Mike Brooks made two free throws and Chris Facione one in the final 30 seconds for the Golden Hawks (11-6, 4-1) at Katella.
Katella had a chance to win in the final 10 seconds but missed a jump shot. Facione finished with 25 points and Brooks had 14. Ian Donnelly scored 21 points for the Knights (5-12, 1-4).
Los Alamitos 54, Loara 51--Dre Lamoureux and Tony Ware each scored 12 points, as the Griffins (14-6, 4-0) held off the host Saxons’ fourth-quarter rally. Loara led, 40-39, at the end of three quarters and held a two-point lead with three minutes left.
Lamoureux had 12 rebounds and Ware 9. Monttes Whitlock scored 16 points to lead Loara (4-12, 0-5).
