Pacific 10 Roundup : Oregon Hands Arizona State First Conference Loss, 86-84

Anthony Taylor scored a career-high 36 points, and Oregon knocked Arizona State out of a share of the Pacific 10 Conference lead with an 86-84 victory Thursday night at Eugene, Ore.

Arthur Thomas, who led the Sun Devils (10-4 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-10) with 15 points, hit a basket with eight seconds left to cut the deficit to 86-82 and added two free throws after time expired.

Taylor had 22 points in the second half, four in a 6-0 Oregon run to open the Ducks’ 41-33 halftime lead to 47-33. The 14-point margin was the largest of the game for Oregon (7-5, 2-1).

Arizona State led much of the first half. Oregon took its first lead, 27-26, with 7:10 left in the half on a layup by Taylor. The Ducks never trailed again.

Arizona 70, Oregon State 48--Steve Kerr made all seven of his shots and scored 21 points as the top-ranked Wildcats trounced the Beavers at Corvallis, Ore.

Kerr connected on five three-pointers, and the Wildcats (15-1, 5-0) jumped to a 16-2 lead and were never threatened, even though the Beavers got within 28-20 at halftime.

Oregon State (8-4, 2-1) missed its first 11 shots of the game and didn’t score against Arizona’s zone defense until nearly eight minutes into the game.

Bill Sherwood scored 20 points for the Beavers, making nine three-point shots.

Stanford 86, Washington 70--Todd Lichti scored 25 points and Howard Wright added 21 to lead the Cardinal past the Huskies at Palo Alto.

Lichti scored 14 points in the second half, including 2 three-point field goals to give Stanford (11-5, 3-2) a 12-point lead after Washington (4-9, 0-4) cut the margin to six with 7:15 to play.

Jeff Sanor scored 17 points for Washington.

Washington State 59, California 37--Todd Anderson scored 18 points at Berkeley, and the Cougars dealt the Bears their seventh straight defeat.

The Cougars (5-6, 2-2) took a 27-10 halftime lead by hitting 65% of their field goal attempts, while the Bears (4-9, 1-4) connected on 3 of 22 shots.

David Sanders scored 16 points and Brian Wright added 14 for Washington State, which opened a 23-point lead when Cal made 1 of 12 shots to open the second half.

Matt Beeuwsaert scored 18 points for Cal.
