LONDON — The Church of England said Saturday that it paid $21,600 to two intermediaries in an unsuccessful bid to free its envoy, Terry Waite, 49, who disappeared in Lebanon a year ago.
A spokesman said the church paid the money “to cover traveling and related expenses. . . . There was no useful result.”
Details of the incident were reported in a London tabloid, The Sunday People.
