PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — Canadian Donny Lalonde knocked out Eddie Davis of Freeport, N.Y., 30 seconds into the second round Friday night to claim the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight title.
The title was vacated when Thomas Hearns stepped down to the middleweight ranks.
Lalonde, of Winnipeg, knocked Davis down twice in the first round with hard right- and left-hand combinations. Davis was saved by the bell after the second knockdown.
The 27-year-old Canadian ended the scheduled 12-round title bout, held in the open air National Stadium, with a flurry of punches that put the 36-year-old Davis down for the third and final time.
Davis remained motionless on the canvas even after referee Ismael Quinones of Puerto Rico counted him out. He was then helped to his corner, and apparently was not seriously hurt.
With the victory, Lalonde became the first Canadian in 61 years to win a light heavyweight title. Jack Delaney did it last with a decision over Paul Berlenback at New York in 1926.
