Toll in I-15 Accident Rises to 3; Lone Survivor Stable

Two of three people killed when a speeding car rear-ended their van in Escondido were identified Sunday by authorities.

The accident occurred on Interstate 15 near Centre City Parkway about 6 p.m. Saturday, when a car traveling south rear-ended the victims’ van, knocking it off the freeway and causing it to roll down an embankment, according to a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The van finally came to rest on its roof on Centre City Parkway.

The driver of the van, Brian Jacklin, 46, of Hemet, and two of his three passengers were killed in the crash, police said. One passenger, Nancy Lanphere, 34, of Homeland, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jacklin and another passenger, whose name had not been released as of late Sunday, died later in area hospitals. The third passenger, Jacklin’s wife, Cathy, was in stable condition with minor injuries at Palomar Hospital on Sunday night.

The driver of the car that rear-ended Jacklin’s van left the scene of the accident, police said, but was arrested a short time later when his car became disabled.

Francisco Alvarez, 23, of Loma Linda, was being held Sunday night in the Vista jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony drunk driving and hit-and-run, a CHP spokesman said. Neither Alvarez nor a second man in his car was injured in the accident.
