NHL Roundup : Nieuwendyk Scores 4 Goals as Calgary Routs Quebec, 9-1

Rookie Joe Nieuwendyk scored four goals, three on the power play, and the Calgary Flames dealt Quebec its fourth straight defeat, 9-1, Thursday night at Calgary.

Nieuwendyk completed his hat trick midway through the second period, when he fired his own rebound at the edge of the crease past goalie Mario Brunetta for his third power-play goal of the game. The 21-year-old former Cornell player also had a three-goal game Oct. 18 against the Boston Bruins.

He got his fourth goal, and 11th of the season, when he fired a 15-foot shot past Brunetta in the third period.

The Flames took a 4-1 lead by the end of the first period, partly on short-handed goals by Hakan Loob and Perry Berezan seven seconds apart.

Vancouver 4, Detroit 1--Goalie Frank Caprice, making his first appearance since April 3, 1986, made 19 saves, and rookie Dave Saunders scored his first NHL goal at Detroit as the Canucks won for the fifth time in eight games.

Toronto 3, St. Louis 3--Defenseman Al Iafrate scored his 10th goal of the season and fourth in five games to give the Maple Leafs the tie at St. Louis, where Toronto is winless since February 1983.

Iafrate’s goal came with 7:40 to play in the second period, and the game was scoreless the rest of the way.

Minnesota 4, New York Rangers 3--Scott Bjugstad scored with 7:17 left in the third period to lift the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn., and give Coach Herb Brooks his first victory against the team that fired him nearly three years ago.
