Local News in Brief : AIDS Drug Tests Planned

The first human tests of a controversial new AIDS drug are scheduled to begin on six patients this month at County-USC Medical Center, federal health officials said Wednesday.
Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health, where the drug was developed, said they are seeking AIDS patients to participate in the study, which will test the toxicity of the drug, Peptide T.
Institute officials said they believe that Peptide T, may keep the AIDS virus from binding to the so-called T-4 helper cells, the critical immune system cells typically attacked and destroyed by the virus.
