Fountain Valley Defeats Marina For Sunset Title

Fountain Valley High School capitalized on two key Marina mistakes to clinch the Sunset League title by defeating the Vikings, 20-14, Friday at Westminster High School.
The victory was the sixth straight for the Barons (6-4 overall, 5-0 in league). Marina finished 1-9, 0-5.
Baron defensive tackle Ed Fischer broke through the Marina line and blocked an Eddie Rhea punt with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter. The Barons recovered on the Viking 29, and four plays later, quarterback Dave Henigan sneaked into the end zone from the one-yard line, giving Fountain Valley the lead, 14-7.
On the first play of the final quarter, Baron junior defensive back Rick Moch intercepted a Dave Schultz pass at the Viking 24-yard line. Four plays later, Courtney Dubar scored a one-yard touchdown, making it, 20-7.
The Vikings made it close on a 47-yard touchdown run by senior Kevin Magula with 8:09 remaining.
Baron Coach Mike Milner said he knew early in the season his team was capable of finishing Sunset League play undefeated even after starting the season 0-4.
