Eight UC Irvine Players Advance in Tennis

Eight UC Irvine players scored victories at the Rolex/ITCA men’s tennis tournament at UC Irvine Thursday.
Irvine freshman Mike Briggs, a Southern Section 5-A semifinalist at Corona del Mar High School last year, defeated Rick Matheson of the University of San Diego, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round, and USD’s Doug Livingston, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.
Other players who won first- and second-round matches for the 11th-ranked Anteaters were Trevor Kronemann, Mike Cadigan, Richard Lubner, Shige Kanroji, Chris Ewing, Mike Saunders and freshman Carsten Hoffmann, a former University High standout.
The tournament continues today with the third round at 9 a.m. and the fourth round at 2 p.m.
