Qantas Airways and Air New Zealand said they are ready to discuss a way--perhaps even a merger--to better compete against U.S. airlines flying across the Pacific. “The differences between our governments and the airlines is dwarfed by the competition of the American mega-carriers,” said Qantas Chief Executive John Menadue. “Worldwide airlines are looking at mergers across international boundaries.” United Airlines and Continental Airlines are the main U.S. carriers on transpacific routes.
