Doug Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colo., running only his third marathon since 1982, won the San Diego Marathon and qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials with a time of 2 hours 18 minutes 52 seconds. The qualifying mark is 2:20.
Debbi Waldear, 37, of Kirkwood, Calif., won the women’s race with a time of 2:50:49. Waldear, who will compete in the U.S. Olympic cross-country skiing trials in January, missed qualifying for the marathon trials by 50 seconds.
