Matt Patterson and Defense Carry Corona del Mar, 13-3

Matt Patterson’s 69-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter Friday night capped a 13-3 victory for Corona del Mar High School over Saddleback in front of 1,500 at Newport Harbor High School.
Patterson, a 185-pound senior running back, gained 111 yards in 17 carries as the Sea Kings improved their Sea View League record to 3-1. They are 4-5 overall.
Saddleback (4-4-1, 2-1-1) took a 3-0 first-quarter lead on Carlos Zavala’s 22-yard field goal. The score was set up by Joe Hester’s interception of pass by Mitch Melbon with 4:35 left.
Corona del Mar tied the score with 11 minutes remaining in the half on Pat Callahan’s 32-yard field goal. The score capped a 10-play drive.
With 1:15 left in the half, Callahan’s 21-yard field goal gave Corona del Mar a 6-3 lead.
But it was Patterson’s long touchdown run with 7:38 to play that put the game away. Callahan’s extra point kick made it 13-3.
Saddleback quarterback Sean Therien completed 8 of 15 passes for 84 yards.
