Brad Greer of Huntington Beach overcame his own error on the 16th hole to take a one-stroke victory Tuesday in the $50,000 MasterCard Pro-Am golf tournament at Ponte Vedra, Fla.
Greer, who led by three strokes over Robert Wrenn going into the par-5 16th, hit his third shot into a lake beyond the green. Greer nearly holed his recovery and settled for a bogey.
He followed with a par for a closing-round 2-under 70 and a final 5-under-par 139 for 36 holes at the Tournament Players Club Stadium at Sawgrass.
The tournament featured the top 24 money winners from the PGA’s 1986 qualifying school. Greer, a USC graduate, earned $10,000 for the victory, more than doubling his previous 1987 earnings. Wrenn, of Midlothian, Va., finished second at 140, earning $7,500. Perry Arthur of Plano, Tex., finished third.
