Fisheries Commission to Meet at Port

The Pacific Marine Fisheries Commission, which represents the commercial and sport-fishing industries in California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska, will hold its 40th annual meeting at the Port of Los Angeles Tuesday and Wednesday.
The meeting’s host will be California Assemblyman Gerald N. Felando (R-San Pedro), who chairs the commission and was recently appointed to a second term by Gov. George Deukmejian. That appointment must be confirmed by the state Senate.
On Tuesday, the commission will focus on two major issues: marine debris, particularly plastics, that threatens the lives of sea animals, and possible amendments to the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which the agency believes should be altered to take into account the needs of the fishing industry.
On Wednesday, the commission will conduct its regular business meeting to determine what action to take on those as well as other issues.
