Smoke in Control Tower Briefly Closes JFK

NEW YORK — John F. Kennedy International Airport was closed for half an hour today when smoke filled a room in the control tower and forced the evacuation of the building, authorities said.
The airport closed from 3:28 a.m. to 3:59 a.m. after heavy smoke from an overheated elevator motor filled a room on the top floor of the 10-story tower and triggered a fire alarm, an airport spokesman said. No injuries were reported.
