Last spring I came upon a reference in Jerry Hulse’s Travel Tips to the English Experience, which is a sponsor of Arthur and Avril Meakin’s English Literature summer schools based in Sheffield. After meeting with Daphne Sturrock of the English Experience, I decided to enroll and cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone really desiring to know England by staying for two weeks with hand-chosen families. You study literature informally with professors from the University of Sheffield, travel and hike about northern England, visit homes and environs of the Brontes, Wordsworth, Byron and Lawrence, to name a few.
