An unemployed Rancho Palos Verdes man fell 90 feet to his death on jagged rocks on the ocean shore below a cliff in San Pedro when he climbed atop a narrow precipice in an area prohibited to climbers Thursday, Harbor Division police said.
Officer Dennis Azevedo said Frederick Jones, 29, was climbing in an area called Sunken City--”jagged pieces of concrete left over from a roadway that collapsed”--with his brother and two friends when the victim “hit a soft spot below the precipice and he just did sort of a back flip and fell on the rocks below.”
Azevedo said there are numerous signs prohibiting climbing or playing in the area.
