JACKSON, Miss. — State Auditor Ray Mabus faces millionaire hotel magnate Mike Sturdivant in Mississippi’s Democratic gubernatorial runoff today.
Mabus, 38, defeated Sturdivant, 59, by 160,000 votes in the Aug. 4 primary, the biggest margin of victory in 84 years, and he has maintained a large lead in recent polls.
The Democratic winner faces Tupelo businessman Jack Reed, 63, who easily won the Republican primary. Reed is given little chance to defeat either Mabus or Sturdivant in the Nov. 3 general election.
