Tennis Roundup : Cash Leads Favorites Into Third Round

Wimbledon champion Pat Cash of Australia routed Roberto Saad of Argentina, 6-0, 6-0, in 52 minutes Wednesday as most of the seeded players breezed into the third round of the $375,000 Player’s International tournament at Montreal.

In other matches, top-seeded Ivan Lendl disposed of Todd Witsken, 6-3, 6-2, and defending champion Boris Becker of West Germany, seeded third, eliminated Kelly Jones, 7-5, 6-4.

Also, fourth-seeded Jimmy Connors beat Derrick Rostagno, 7-6, 6-1, and sixth-seeded John McEnroe defeated Christo Steyn of South Africa, 6-3, 6-1.

The only upset of the day occurred when Kelly Evernden of New Zealand defeated seventh-seeded Tim Mayotte, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

Cash, seeded fifth, said the Saad match was the quickest he had played since he was a junior.

“It wasn’t as if the guy (Saad) couldn’t hit the ball at all,” Cash said. “His serves were so hard, I was just concentrating on getting my racket on the ball. It wasn’t that he didn’t play well. I played very well.”

Despite his victory, Becker didn’t play up to form. He made 18 unforced errors, compared with nine for Jones.

“I played only average,” Becker said. “Sometimes I made good shots and sometimes loose shots. I didn’t always finish the points.”

Fourth-seeded Horst Skoff of Austria defaulted his second-round match against Paul McNamee of Australia at Saint Vincent, Italy, after he fell off his courtside chair during a changeover, injuring his wrist.

Skoff, 19, upset after losing a break, sat down too heavily, overturned the chair and injured his wrist trying to break his fall. The incident occurred during the third set with Skoff trailing McNamee, 0-6, 6-3, 4-3.

Doctors said the wrist was not broken.

Ninteen-year-old Peter Korda upset second-seeded Milan Srejber, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in a $180,000 tournament at Prague.

Korda was the second little-known Czech to give one of his countrymen a shock in the past two days. Tuesday, Jaroslav Navratil beat top-seeded Miloslav Mecir.
