The Glendale City Council on Tuesday awarded a $6.8-million contract to a New York company to build a 742-space, multilevel parking garage in the downtown redevelopment area.
Taylor Woodrow Construction Corp. is expected to begin work by mid-September and complete the project in a year, said Susan Shick, deputy director of redevelopment.
The garage will be built on Maryland Avenue between Broadway and Wilson Avenue. Seven businesses from 128 to 136 N. Brand Blvd. will be replaced with a shopping arcade linking Brand Boulevard with the garage, Shick said.
Merchants have the option of temporarily relocating their businesses while the development is being built or using a city subsidy to move elsewhere.
