San Pedro : Fish Plant Grant Sought
The City of Los Angeles has applied for a $1-million federal grant to help pay for freezer and unloading facilities at the former StarKist cannery on Terminal Island.
The $2.2-million facility, which would be open to the general San Pedro commercial fishing fleet, would also be funded by the county and the Fishermen’s Cooperative Assn., according to harbor-area Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores.
The project, being coordinated through Mayor Tom Bradley’s city economic development office, would ensure that local boaters have a place to store and process their catch. The former StarKist cannery is now being operated by United Food Processors, a subsidiary of the fishermen’s cooperative.
