Consolidated Rail (Conrail), headquartered in Philadelphia, and Chicago-based Santa Fe Southern Pacific said they will begin the faster freight train service between northern New Jersey and California on July 30. The trip will take 76 hours instead of the current 90 hours. New U.S. Postal Service contracts to carry bulk business mail required the faster service and contain bonus and penalty clauses for the railroads’ ability to meet the new schedule.
