Trimedyne Receives Grant for Its Laser Treatments

Trimedyne Inc., a Santa Ana medical laser maker, said it received the first of what it hopes will be a series of grants from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, for its ongoing research into laser treatments for atherosclerosis. The award was about $50,000.
In March, Trimedyne’s Laserprobe-PLR catheter became the first laser device to receive marketing approval from the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of leg atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries that blocks blood flow and contributes to heart attacks.
