Thunderstorms raked the lower Great Lakes, Plains and Southeast, unleashing tornadoes and whipping up 58-m.p.h. winds and water spouts in Lake Erie, while rain drenched the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. In Ohio, a tornado ripped the roofs off four garages and toppled trees and power lines in Youngstown, while in Willowick, a twister tore awnings off a house and smashed them into cars. Tornadoes were also reported in Dade County, Fla., and Beulah, Kan. Flood watches were posted in New Hampshire and Vermont.
