Saudi Arabia has secretly helped finance U.S. foreign policy by contributing billions of dollars in the past 20 years to movements and governments in a dozen countries to further Western, anti-Marxist interests, according to a published report. The New York Times, citing interviews with diplomats, intelligence specialists and lawmakers, said Saudi money has gone to movements or governments in such countries as Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, Zaire and Nicaragua. The newspaper said the contributions generally have furthered Saudi interests by opposing communism and promoting stability in Muslim countries.
