An amendment calling for a study of ways to reduce “plastic pollution” that kills seals, birds and fish at sea won approval from the Senate Commerce Committee. The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), was added to an authorization bill for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration programs. It directs the commerce secretary to seek the reduction of plastic pollution in the planning of department programs.
