Former Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver’s plan to stage a patriotic rally in Fremont’s Central Park suffered a setback when park officials decided he picked the wrong day--the Fourth of July. “Had this request been on any other day but a major holiday, we would have welcomed it,” said Leonard Maitland, city environmental services superintendent. Park officials have recommended that the City Council reject the request from Cleaver and a group affiliated with the conservative National Center for Constitutional Study, because it would overtax the city staff on the busiest day of the year at the park.
