New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo signed legislation allowing experimental camera coverage of criminal and civil trials starting Dec. 1, a move hailed by legal groups but blasted by women’s rights activists. “The bill will serve the salutary purpose of opening our trial courts to public view and inspection,” Cuomo said. “New Yorkers pay for their courts. They deserve to see what’s inside them,” said Hank Henry, executive director of the Fund for Modern Courts, one of a dozen legal, governmental and citizen organizations that backed the legislation.
