Lebanon’s Parliament, in an emergency session, refused to accept Speaker Hussein Husseini’s resignation and called for all militia groups in the war-torn country to be disbanded. Husseini, who did not attend, resigned last week due to dissatisfaction with President Amin Gemayel’s handling of the probe into former Premier Rashid Karami’s assassination. It was not known whether Husseini will withdraw his resignation in view of Parliament’s action. Only 51 of Parliament’s 84 members attended the session, at which they called for the full prosecution of those involved in Karami’s murder and for the “removal of all armed elements from Lebanese territory.”
