Weinberger Meets With Saudi Defense Minister

NICE, France — Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger met in Nice on Thursday with his Saudi Arabian counterpart for talks about the U.S. escalation of naval power in the Persian Gulf region.
Weinberger and Defense Minister Sultan ibn Abdulaziz met at Aurore villa, Saudi King Fahd’s residence on the French Riviera. The Pentagon said earlier in the week that the two men would discuss the U.S. presence in the Persian Gulf--increased after last month’s fatal Iraqi missile attack on the Navy frigate Stark--and U.S. plans to escort 11 Kuwaiti tankers there.
The talks also were expected to include how far Saudi Arabia is willing to go in supporting a reinforced U.S. presence in the gulf.
