Houston may be economically depressed, but the city will soon get a cultural uplift when the $25-million Houston Museum of Fine Arts, housing one of the largest private collections of surrealist art opens Sunday. The Menil Collection, a $150-million array of first-rank modern paintings, tribal sculpture and Byzantine art works was collected by Shlumberger oil fortune heiress Dominique de Menil. The collection is best known for its rich breadth of 20th-Century paintings ranging from an early Picasso to the contemporary minimalism of Brice Marden.
