U.S. Tests 6th A-Weapon of Year

PAHUTE MESA, Nev. — A thermonuclear weapon with a maximum explosive force 11 times greater than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in World War II was exploded underground in the Nevada desert today.
The Department of Energy said the 6:30 a.m. test, code-named “Hardin,” was the sixth announced nuclear test by the United States this year. The Soviets announced their sixth test Easter Sunday after ending an 18-month unilateral moratorium in mid-February. Ten anti-nuclear protesters picketed the entrance of the Nevada Test Site today.
