High School Baseball : Pitchers’ Duel Ends in Eighth as Coronado Beats Southwest, 4-0
- Share via
Coronado High School’s Paul Austin and Southwest’s Jose Leano each allowed only two hits through seven innings Tuesday.
That was somewhat surprising. Austin is the No. 1 starter for Coronado--undefeated in the Metro Conference--but Leano was making his first start for last-place Southwest after he hurt his arm at the beginning of the season.
But it was no surprise when Coronado (6-0, 13-4) scored four runs in the top of the eighth and Austin (6-1) got three quick outs in the bottom of the inning for a 4-0 victory. Southwest (1-5, 3-13) remains tied for last.
Leano (0-1) pitched to only one batter in the eighth, walking Matt Rutter. Reliever Alan Paranada gave up back-to-back triples to Alan Lane and Steve Lucal. They both scored on a single by J.D. Douglas.
CITY WESTERN LEAGUE University of San Diego High School 12, Kearny 0--Tom Stilinovich pitched a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking four, for first-place USDHS (6-2, 14-4) at home over last-place Kearny (1-7, 2-12).
METRO CONFERENCE Castle Park 3, Mar Vista 2--Henry Monreal allowed four hits, struck out five and drove in the winning run with a squeeze bunt to lead Castle Park (2-3, 13-6). Juan Beltran singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and then scored on Monreal’s bunt. Mar Vista is 3-4, 10-7-2.
Chula Vista 4, Bonita Vista 3--Chula Vista shortstop Steve Trainor made three errors but had three RBIs to lead Spartans (4-1, 11-5) at home over Bonita Vista (1-5. 5-13). Teddy Ehrhardt drove in Bonita Vista’s runs with a bases-loaded double.
Briefly: Hilltop 10, Montgomery 3.
GROSSMONT LEAGUE Granite Hills 11, Valhalla 1--Granite Hills (7-1, 15-3), which has scored an average of 14 runs in its last eight games, kept up its average at home against Valhalla (4-4, 6-8). George Bishop had a single, a double, a home run and three RBIs. Mike Raskind (7-1) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven.
Grossmont 3, El Cajon Valley 0--Lance Dickson allowed two hits and struck out 12 to lead Grossmont (5-3, 13-5) at El Cajon Valley (2-6, 5-11). Dickson (6-2) has 84 strikeouts this season. Doug Davis singled in Rick Twyman and Mike Rendina in the third. Donnie O’Brien hit a solo home run in the fourth for Grossmont.
