John Brenner will try to improve on his American shotput record of 73 feet 1/2 inch, and Carl Lewis will continue his quest of Bob Beamon’s long-standing long jump record today at the Puma-Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut.
Other features of the invitational meet that begins at noon include:
--American record-holder Jimmy Howard opposing Doug Nordquist in the high jump. They were ranked Nos. 2 and 3 in the world, respectively, in 1986.
--Olympic champions Alonzo Babers and Roger Kingdom competing in their gold medal events, the 400 meters and the 110-meter high hurdles.
--Johnny Gray, the American record-holder in the 800 meters, moving up to the 1,500.
--UCLA’s 1,600-meter relay team, composed of Anthony Washington, Kevin Young, Danny Everett and Henry Thomas, attempting to go under 3 minutes against two all-star teams, one with Edwin Moses and the other with Andre Phillips, who are more renowned as 400-meter intermediate hurdlers.
Lewis will be challenged by Larry Myricks, the last long jumper to beat Lewis before he began his 48-meet winning streak in 1981. Beamon’s world record is 29-2 1/2, set in the 1968 Olympic Games at Mexico City.
